Future Book

I’ve always wanted to read the book “Peace Like A River” by Leif Enger. Has anyone read it? Not only is he a Minnesotan, he went to school at Moorhead State! Can we add this to our maybe list?

Thanks!

Beth

What were your childhood dreams?

Do you remember what your childhood dreams were?  It really has been a long time since I've given any thought to mine.  In my day to day life, I sometimes find myself comparing my accomplishments to those of other people.  Maybe it's my friend who has a really great paying job and travels extensively, a peer who got a promotion, an acquaintance who is a gifted artist or athlete, or someone I don't even know that, from the outside looking in, appears to have achieved some enviable level of greatness in their life.  Randy Pausch's book, "The Last Lecture" inspired me to reflect back and list what I remembered to be my childhood dreams.  Once I had done that, I realized that I have actually accomplished many of my childhood dreams and the people that I have sometimes used as a measuring stick for my life are living their dreams not mine.

I also appreciated Randy's approach to mentoring and coaching others in a way that made it easy to listen.  I laughed when I read his account of telling one student that it was too bad that others perceived him as being such a jerk because it would really limit how far he could go in life.  (I'm paraphrasing with the jerk terminology).  As someone who works in employee employee relations, I'm sure I will have an opportunity to try this approach very soon!

Amy, thanks for setting up this blog and inviting me to be a part of the book club long distance.  Next time, I'll try to get my blog in before you meet!

Recent Reads

I finished a book the other day. Finally, after not finishing the book we have picked for book club for, ummm, THREE months, I have finished one. Granted I have read other books in that time I just wasn't able to get into the ones that we had picked out. A few months ago my grandma had given me to read. The one I read is called Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst. It was pretty good and an easy, quick read. The story is based on a group of people on a reality show. They get clues and have to figure out where to go and how to get there faster than everyone else. Like the Amazing Race. They are in groups of two. Each chapter is written from the perspective of a different person. The game show of course throws in lots of little twists to create drama. Everyone in the game sort of has a little secret that they don't want all of America to know. Those things always make for a good story! I think I will read the other book she wrote, The Dogs of Babel. The second book my grandma let me borrow was A Year in the Life of a Small Town: Good News from North Haven by Michael L. Lindvall. It is written from the perspective of a pastor in small town MN. I have only read one chapter. But I can already tell . . . it is going to be awesome! I have related to some things in it already. So funny. Any recent reads from anyone else???

The Diving Bell & The Butterfly

Hey,

Oops, I ordered the video for The Diving Bell & The Butterfly instead of the book.

Does anyone else have these types of issues?!

If anyone would like to view it, just let me know.

Great Name

Hi,

What a very clever name. I am looking forward to future reads but am determined to make it through “Love in the Time of Cholera!” Thanks, Amy, for setting this up.

The Start of Novel Reflections!

I am so excited to do the first post for our book club! We decided this would be a good tool to help us to continue the discussion on the books we have read as well as reflections on other books read outside of book club. Please feel free to share suggestions with everyone! Let the blogging begin!
